There's no shortage of run bras on the market that are fiiine and, for the most part, can get the job done. But what separates those bras from a new favorite you'll reach for every time you head out for a run? It generally comes down to three things all executed to perfection together.
For those who have read other "What makes a great..." articles we've written, you already know the first one—it all starts with the fabric. Aside from its performance qualities (sweat-wicking + quick drying), our Italian Superbeam™ fabric has the perfect amount of compression. It's supportive, keeping everything in place, and never makes you feel squeezed or restricted. Check.
Now, there are a lot of great fabrics out there, so all things equal—the next most important factor in what makes a great run bra is functionality. And when we say "functionality," what we really mean is pocketing. Pocketing is far and away the most important function for run bras and so we designed ours with three of them. Two small side pockets, one under each arm, for your gels or keys, cards, cash, etc. And one center-back, easily-reachable, anti-bounce phone pocket.
When we point out the center-back phone pocket, most people don't believe it can fit a phone because of how small it looks. The intentionally small design allows for the phone to fit snug between the shoulder blades so it never bounces around. In fact, many report they forget their phone is even there.
Now, the last but certainly not least attribute that makes a run bra great, is the aesthetic. For many run bras out there, the first thing you notice when you look at it is the functionality—bulky straps, large bindings, visible buckles, exposed pockets. For us, we wanted the functionality to be virtually invisible and finished cleanly to the body.
Notice the half-moon cut-out...
Not only is that detail very much on trend with what exists both in fashion and in fashion-forward activewear, but it serves the design of the phone pocket. The natural cutaway stops your phone from falling beyond your reach and eliminated the need for us to add a stopper or separate pocket bag. That half-moon detail is the epitome of style and function coming together.
So, when you bring these three things together—quality performance compression fabric, functional pocketing, and a clean aesthetic—you have all the makings for a great run bra.
