NYC isn't exactly known for its ability to support large open spaces, but alas the runnings gods found a way. Here we breakdown four different indoor tracks for your perfectly climatized running pleasure.
THE greatest indoor track (sorry Boston), home to the BEST indoor track meet (Millrose Games), and it's conveniently located right off the 1/A. All that history will give you some major track hack (read: super dry air that makes your throat hurt after an all out mile), which is well worth it. New Yorkers have access to this facility daily for training (6:30am-3pm, 7pm-10pm Monday-Friday) and via NYRR for racing. Just make sure you check the schedule because you might show up when only High Schoolers are allowed.
Cost: $10 for a session pass.
The OTHER Armory, this YMCA is the most accessible indoor track for Brooklynites. While it may not be banked, you can still get your reps in on this 200 meter track. Just try to go at off-peak times if you want to avoid crowds.
Cost: $71 / month
While it may not feature as many lanes as the first two facilities and is definitely on the pricier side, Chelsea piers offers a 200 meter banked track right on the water on the west side of Manhattan. You won't catch the same hard core runner vibe as the two Armory's, but you can still get the work in when the conditions slide outside.
Price: $60 guest pass (gives you access to all other facilities and sports - batting cages, ice skating, driving range, gym, and more)
If this facility were anywhere but Staten Island, it would top this list. So if you have a friend that has a car, you'll love Ocean Breeze. Check it out, their FREE (yes, FREE) Mile Mania meets are an amazing place to start. Just be sure to pack dinner as essentially everything on the drive back is closed when these meets wrap up.
Cost: $75 for 6-months, or do those free meets.
